The What Works study looks at the key factors that build leadership and commitment across generations. Rather than focus on well-documented differences, What Works examines what helps potential leaders do their best work, what constitutes a good workplace, and how to improve on our ability to retain, support, and promote staff across generations.
This report identifies and documents models of shared leadership that address potential barriers to effectiveness, including the growing demands on executives running nonprofits, the current realities of a multigenerational workforce where older leaders will stay longer, and the expectations and work style of new generations coming into the workplace with a strong team orientation.
Our research and experience shows that relatively small shifts in service provision can cause ripple effects; raising up constituent voice, fostering community cohesion and increasing engagement in advocacy efforts. This series highlights “5% shifts” that don’t rely on organizations completely changing course and reinventing themselves. This report explores partnerships initiated in cities in two different parts of the country that are facing similar social and economic struggles: Detroit and Albuquerque.
